Jacob Spafford (1760-1841)
Jacob Spafford was born in Massachusetts and later lived in Bergen, NY, making him apparently the first Spafford to reside in Bergen (his father never lived there).
From reference labeled simply "North America, Family Histories, 1500-2000" at Ancestry:
Settled in Buckland, Mass; removed about 1800 to Bergen, Genoese County, N. Y., passing the present site of Rochester, N. Y., then containing but one family. She (Abigail Deane (1760-1832) was of Boston, Mass.
Jacob served in the revolutionary war in 1776 and 1777. His record, from the state of Massachusetts (found in my archives), lists the following:
- Appears on a Pay Abstract of Capt. Manasseh Sawyer's company, Col. Dike's regiment for mileage home to Dorchester Heights.
- Residence, Leominster.
- Warrant allowed in Council, September 13, 1776.
- Mileage for 48 miles allowed said Spafford.
- Appears with rank of Private on a Pay Abstract of Capt. Manasseh Sawyer's company, Col. Nicholas Dike's regiment for travel allowance home, etc.
- Residence, Leominster,
- Dated Dorchester Heights, November 30, 1776.
- Credited with 2 days' allowance (48 miles).
- Appears with rank of Private on Muster and Pay Roll of Capt. John Joslin's company, Col. Job Cushing's (Worcester County) regiment.
- Time of service, 1 month, 7 days.
- Company marched from Leominster to Bennington the last of July, 1777, to join forces under Col. Seth Warner by order of Council.
- Dated Leominster.
- Appears on Muster and Pay Roll of Lieut. Samuel Stickney's company, Col. Abijah Stearns's Worcester County regiment.
- Marched October 9, 1777.
- Time of service, 17 days.
- Company marched to Saratoga under command of Maj. Ebenezer
- Bridge to assist army under Gen. Gates.
- Certified at Leominster.
The US Pension Roll of 1835 (via Ancestry) lists him as receiving a pension and describes his service as a private who served in the New Hampshire militia.
